Mermaid Protector recommends to celebrate World Environment Day
Every day of the year

The theme for World Environment Day 2020 is –
“Time for Nature”, with a focus on providing the essential infrastructure that supports life on earth and human development.

Given the current global situation, we are making a special call for biodiversity. Biodiversity is the variety of various living organisms present on earth and their interaction and interrelationship. There are three main type of biodiversity viz. genetic, species and ecosystem or habitat biodiversity. The diversity linked to micro-organisms, different plants and animals is included in biodiversity. Bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms, bryophytes and the various plants, birds, insects, fish and humans are all fundamental part of biodiversity.

Biodiversity can occur in a very small particular area or in a very large area like the ocean.

Biodiversity for example can occur in a very small aquarium where there are few small fish or it can occur in a large oceans where huge fish like whales and sharks live with other aquatic animals.

Biodiversity is part of different ecosystems such as the desert ecosystem, the aquatic ecosystem and the terrestrial ecosystem, including the grassland ecosystem and the forest ecosystem. Biodiversity therefore can be find everywhere on earth. Biodiversity is very important for balancing our terrestrial environment and our ecosystem. The ecosystem is the interaction and interrelation between different living organisms and its non-living environment. The species can be different according to the different environments and the geological conditions. Therefore the diversity linked to the different types of ecosystems is called ecosystem biodiversity.

Importance of biodiversity

Find below the main points about the importance of biodiversity.

Food chain: There are enormous amounts of living organisms living on earth. They are helpful for making up and being part of a natural food chain which is important for balancing and maintaining our ecosystem.

Aesthetic value: Biodiversity is very useful for aesthetic value of our earth.

Provides variety of food: Several kinds of food can be obtained from different kinds of plants and animals.

Provides medical resources: Different kinds of medicines can be prepared from different kinds of plants and animals.

Productive values: Certain daily products like for example oil or leather can be obtained from different kinds of animals and plants.

Biodiversity protects the water resources and is responsible for cleaning it. Biodiversity has also improved the quality of the soil and is reducing the risk of flooding while increasing fertility, so potential crop yields.

We are currently taking tons of food from the oceans. If we don’t protect these sources of food, how are we going to replace them in the future?

And what about traditional or modern medicine. Medical diversity is necessary to treat diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

So many modern medicines such as some pain relievers, heart medicines, anticancer medicines and diabetes treatments are derived from wild species. There are so many other species that have not yet been studied or discovered but could provide us with a generally important remedy or treatment. If we do not start to prevent biodiversity loss, we may never have the chance to discover and develop this potentially life-saving aid.

Loss of biodiversity increases the spread of infectious diseases. The epidemics triggered by the avian influenza, Ebola virus, malaria and corona virus have all been attributed to human impacts on destruction of biodiversity.

Loss of biodiversity

There are certain threats to biodiversity that are responsible for the extinction of species and ecosystems.

High population rates are responsible for the loss of habitats for different types of animals as well as plants.
Pollution including air, water and soil pollution destructs biodiversity.
Natural calamities are directly related to the loss of biodiversity. Forest fires have an immense impact, insect infestation destroy plants and certain animal epidemics can limit biodiversity.
The ongoing deforestation by cutting trees for the industrialization and urbanization leads to the loss of biodiversity.
Sometimes, exotic species migrate from one ecosystem to another ecosystem and then completely dominate over certain species before they eliminate them.
Illegal hunting is also responsible for extinction of many species of animals.

All the factors above are mainly responsible for the loss of biodiversity. But there are additional factors that are also responsible for the loss of biodiversity such as

The spread of hostile plants from one ecosystem to another.
Loss of habitants due to climate change or due to destructions caused by humans or other dominant species in a particular ecosystem.
Uncontrolled use of natural resources for example to get energy.
The destruction of water bodies, migration of species, disturbance of water flows and the changes in aquatic environments.

Human domination is the greatest danger of biodiversity. Humans take advantage of their power to consume all types of resources and by this endanger the life of other species.
Humans are also responsible for the pollution of the environment. Industrialization, deforestation, agriculture, pollution and changes in habitats are main dangers for the diversity of species.
This affects the reproduction of the species or kills directly due to various diseases formed by the pollution done by the humans.
Humans are responsible for the migration of certain species from one ecosystem to another, and the loss of species from local ecosystems as a result.
Monocultural farming is one of the main reasons for the extinction of plant species.
CO2 emissions from various industries are responsible for global warming and the disruption of species biodiversity.
Biodiversity conservation is very important for the sustainability of a healthier earth by preserving and protecting species, ecosystem, and natural resources.

Main objectives of biodiversity conservation

Protect and maintain important ecosystems from destruction by preserving natural resources, maintaining the crucial ecosystem process, minimizing use, optimizing consumption, avoiding waste and maintaining aids and survival systems.

Since humans are part of the biodiversity of the ecosystem, it is ethical to conserve biodiversity.

Protect and preserve plants and animal species from extinction.

Promote the development of rar species, ensure the exploration of new species and their importance as well as the importance of their ecosystem for sustainable biodiversity.

Maintain the aesthetics of the Earth.

Since humans are the main consumers of resources, the conservation of biodiversity requires economic and scientific knowledge.

EVERY DAY YOU CAN TAKE PART IN BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION.

Our daily life habits are very important for a sustainable and healthy earth by preserving and protecting species, ecosystem, and natural resources.

What we at Mermaid Protector do for biodiversity conservation?

Our watersport and outdoor fashion is made from recycled polyester. Recycled polyester is NOT virgin polyester but a sustainable alternative to it.
Unlike polyester, recycled polyester uses PET as the raw material. This is the same material that is used in clear plastic water bottles. Recycling PET bottles to create the fabric prevents the bottles from going to landfill. The process of converting PET into recycled polyester requires less energy than the production of normal polyester. In fact it takes 33% – 53% less energy.

Mermaid Protector girls collecting waste

There are two main advantages to this process:

• Using more recycled polyester reduces our dependence on petroleum as the raw material for our fabric needs.
• Diverting PET bottles for this process reduces landfill, and thus less soil contamination, air and water pollution.

Another benefit is that the garments created from recycled polyester can be recycled again and again with no degradation of quality, allowing us to minimize wastage. This means garment manufacture could potentially become a closed loop system, polyester could forever be reused and recycled.

If we were to compare this fiber against natural fibers like cotton, it may still be plastic, but it also has its advantages. We all love cotton, but unless it is organic cotton, we cannot forget the environmental impact of pesticides, chemicals and fertilizers that go into manufacturing the crop. Recycled polyester doesn’t require agricultural land, nor does it consume gallons of water like cotton does.

Compare it with silk, and you have to agree that no living creatures are harmed during its manufacturing process, making it a more ethical option.

Both of these fabrics only have a limited life span; they cannot be reused in the same way as polyester and even though they do eventually breakdown it can still take years to decompose.

Textile recycling technology has immense scope where polyester is concerned. Closed loop manufacturing processes are being adopted by more and more manufacturers today, who refine old polyester into new raw material for garments.

This technology has nominal waste, consumes limited energy and causes very little pollution. In short, it is environment-friendly. Polyester can also be a really quality fabric, breathable, lightweight, hardwearing. The vision we have of “bad quality” polyester is a very outdated one.

• We don’t use plastic bags

• Our fabrics are 100% vegan

• We are part of a recycling loop

• Our fashion is multifunctional = less waste

As consumers you have so much power to change the world by just being careful in what you buy. Realize the political power of your money and spend it with the brands you know are treating their workers and the environment in the best possible way.
